He’s Italian, we geddit, wine is kinda a biggie. But you don’t have to water the plants with wine, Gino D’Acampo.

The This Morning chef was caught by hosts Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield feeding the shubbery with the unusual liquid on Monday morning as the camera cut to the kitchen, a wild Gino was spotted in the plant holding a wooden spoon and pouring wine into the soil.

Phil said: ‘Oh, there he is. He’s doing a bit of gardening before he does the cooking.’

But Holly was quick to point out: ‘What? Have you got a bottle of drink in your hand? Oh, you’re watering.’

He told the pair: ‘I’m watering the plant with white wine,’ to which Holly responded with what everyone up and down the country were thinking: ‘Why?’

But Gino had an answer for them. A bizarre answer, but an answer nonetheless.

He said: ‘My grandfather used to say it makes the plant very healthy. Not everyday, because otherwise it dies, but once a week with a little white wine.’

But Holly thought there was another reason his grandad made up that excuse.

She said: ‘I think that would have been his grandmother going “Why have you got that white wine in your hand?” “I’m just watering the plants a bit. It’s good for it.” And you’ve just believed it.’

And Phil quipped: ‘What a waste of wine.’ So true.
