Justin Trudeau: Tragically Hip farewell concert

Beloved Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip performed their final show on Saturday night in Kingston, Ontario, at the end of their 15-stop farewell four, following lead singer Gord Downie’s brain cancer diagnosis. Musical peers like Pearl Jam bid adieu to the band, but Canada’s own Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his own goodbye live from the concert.

Wearing one of the band’s shirts, Trudeau spoke about his love for the group in an interview with Canada’s CBC network before the show began. “This is a moment that really is going to be extremely powerful for all Canadians,” he said.

Trudeau also spoke about the band’s deep roots in Canada and how he and his peers always thought they would make it big internationally. “Tonight I’m thinking, you know what? I’m so glad they’re all ours. Yes they have fans all around the world but they really remain so anchored in Canada in so many ways.” He continued, “Gord and the Tragically Hip are an inevitable and essential part of what we are and who we are as a country.”
