Milwaukee Bucks Rumors: Michael Carter-Williams And Greg Monroe On The Trade Block

By Brad Berreman

The rumor mill is spinning ahead of the NBA‘s trade deadline on Feb. 18, with playoff contenders looking to add while teams headed for the draft lottery may look to move players for future assets. The Milwaukee Bucks looked likely to be a playoff team heading into the season after reaching the postseason last year, but with a 20-31 record they are six games out of the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference and may be looking to move a couple notable players over the next couple weeks.

According to a report from Gery Woelfel of the Journal Times on Thursday, the Bucks may look to move point guard Michael Carter-Williams and center Greg Monroe before the trade deadline. Monroe was Milwaukee’s top free agent signing last summer, and even with a reasonable contract (three years, $50 million) that wouldn’t necessarily be a barrier to a trade. He has delivered as expected so far this season, averaging 16.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.9 blocked shots per game.

On the other hand, Carter-Williams’ scoring (11.5 points per game) has dropped off this season, even compared to what he did after being acquired by Milwaukee at last year’s trade deadline (14.1 points per game over 25 games). Consistency has been a problem for the 2014 Rookie of the Year, and his warts as a three-point shooter (31.7 percent this season) and with turnovers (2.8 per game) have remained.

I don’t see the Bucks trading Monroe less than one season into his contract, unless an unlikely offer that simply blows them away comes. Trading Carter-Williams right now could be considered selling low, and if the Bucks don’t get a point guard in return they would be left thin at the position.

With one year left on his contract, and with the upside of youth, Carter-Williams could be easier to move. He also seems like the type of young player other teams would think they can work with or fix, so if the Bucks have a real opportunity to move Carter-Williams a deal could happen quickly.
