WATCH: Ailing 280-pound turtle rescued at Jersey Shore beach

AVALON -- An ailing 280-pound loggerhead turtle was rescued on the shoreline of a Cape May County beach Monday evening.

Three workers from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center were aided in Avalon by several volunteers and the Brigantine Fire Department in pulling in the reptile to safety around 6 p.m., according to Bob Schoelkopf of the center.

Schoelkoppf expects the results of blood tests taken on the female turtle to be available Wednesday, at which time veterinarians will determine the best course of treatment.

He said this morning that the turtle is "sluggish."

Also Monday, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center released into the ocean a Kemp's Ridley sea turtle which had been rehabilitated at New England Aquarium. It was transported to Cape May County to be freed in warmer waters.
