With the draft in the rear-view mirror, all eyes have turned to free agency which officially begins in less than 24 hours. When the window opens all free agents, restricted or unrestricted, have the ability to listen to potential suitors and if they feel so inclined, take their talents elsewhere.

It’s also probably the most uncertain period for both teams and players because of the possibility of having to retool a winning formula, as the NBA, like most other sports, is a money driven league. One team that has been on the forefront of moving assets seemingly every free agency period is the Phoenix Suns.

A franchise that has been in flux since the departure of Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni is now rumored to have agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with point guard Brandon Knight on the eve of free agency. Knight was traded to Phoenix by the Milwaukee Bucks in the middle of last season after rifts with management in Milwaukee.

Knight averaged 17.8 points and a career high 5.4 assists per game in his 52 games with the Bucks last season before being moved, and many believed that the once volatile guard actually could live up to the hype that comes with being a top-10 pick out of the basketball factory in Lexington, Kentucky. But when the Suns got Knight he only played in measly 11 games before shutting it down for the season because of surgery on his left ankle.

The Suns thought they had found their backcourt duo of the future when Knight arrived last season, as they saw a pairing of him and already established guard Eric Bledsoe being a formidable duo. But it seems now that Bledsoe will be moved out of Phoenix, and the Suns are going to ride with Knight into the sunset for the tune of $70 million.

This deal by Phoenix is going lead to more internal strife within an organization that can’t seem to keep its players happy. A team that once had Goran Dragic, Isaiah Thomas and Bledsoe all on the books is now left devoid of these players who have abandoned shipped and found greater success with other franchises. Now by giving Knight the keys to the kingdom, the Suns are putting their hope into an unproven, heat check guard who can often go on cold streaks for games at a time.

The squad does have some talented players like the Morris twins, Gerald Green and Alex Len, but these are the kinds of players who need a facilitator at point guard to get their games going, not someone who will hoist up 20 shots a game like Knight.

What all this points to is that Phoenix has gone into full rebuild mode, and if Bledsoe does leave, like all reports suggest, the tanking will have officially commenced. Knight will score and probably a lot, but the Ls will start to pile up in the desert awful quickly.
