Daniel Lawrence, 28, is charged with murder and weapons offenses for allegedly killing 30-year-old Warren Moore, of Jersey City, with a 3-inch folding knife during a confrontation Sept. 2, 2014, outside Lawrence's East Washington Avenue home.

A Jan. 11 trial date was scheduled during Lawrence's appearance Thursday in in New Jersey Superior Court in Belvidere, Warren County Prosecutor Richard Burke said.

Lawrence, who remains incarcerated, was indicted in February 2015. Since then, there have been questions about evidence and Lawrence has changed his attorney.

The murder trial would be Warren County's first since last fall. Andy Torres in October was acquitted of murder but convicted on a felony murder charge -- meaning the jury found he had a role in, but didn't necessarily cause, the death of a gas station attendant during in a 2012 robbery in Phillipsburg. He was sentenced in January to 40 years in prison.

The status of a separate 2014 murder case out of Washington is still uncertain. Ralph A. Atkinson is accused of killing his girlfriend with a knife and hammer in May that year. The 40-year-old is claiming insanity and the state is seeking to verify his mental state. A hearing has been scheduled for September.
