This story first appeared in the Jan. 30 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
On her post-Globes party rounds, Jill Soloway, along with her trophy for best TV comedy series for Transparent, stopped by the Chateau Marmont for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s private, A-list affair, where Soloway “got effed up” and came face-to-face with Kathy Bates. “She was out of her mind crazy and licked my Globe,” Soloway said laughing, to THR two days later at an Elle mag event at Sunset Tower. “Everybody started doing porn faces with it and holding it and licking it — it’s hard when you’re holding something that people want to be obscene with.”
Much more high-minded (but lost in translation) was the exchange that Helen Mirren had on a recent red carpet. Chinese media giant Tencent invited her to say hi to China. The dame graciously did so and then offered one better: “Free speech! You need free speech!” Afterward, the Chinese reporter asked a fellow reporter what Mirren had meant about being “truly thrifty.”
