Women with full lips in a specific ratio are the most attractive, according to a new study by scientists from the University of California.

Researchers used a focus group of 500 people to rank manipulated computer images of the faces of 100 white women. Images of the women were by evaluated by level of attractiveness and featured digitally-enhanced larger lip surfaces, or had specific upper-to-lower lip ratios. Results indicate that well-defined and full lips best convey youth and attractiveness.

“We advocate preservation of the natural ratio or achieving a 1:2 ratio in lip augmentation procedures while avoiding the overfilled upper lip look frequently seen among celebrities,” Dr. Brian Wong, a scientist at the University of California who was involved in the research, said in a press statement.

Scientists noted that this research has limitations, as there is no established reference range for total lip surface area modification in the general population, forcing them alter the morphed faces based on clinical experiences of what seemed to be feasible.

Researchers hope this information can be used to give plastic surgeons a guide to surgeries which modify lips.

The study was published online by the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery. The research was financed by a grant from Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program at the University of California, Irvine.
