LG Rollable TV

Ever Wish You Could Roll Your TV Up Like A Poster?

Flexible screens have been in development for some time now, but LG Display’s unveiling of an 18-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen — which can be completely rolled up to a 1-inch cube while displaying clear images — has got people talking.

Coming from the people who pioneered the curved TV, the new 18-inch flexible OLED panel has an HD resolution of 1200 x 810 and almost 1 million megapixels, and has impressed those who watched it being demoed.

The key to making the screen flexible is using polyimide film instead of conventional plastic to allow curvature of the flexible panel.

LG has also developed a transparent OLED that will make images less hazy by increasing light transmittance to 30%, rather than 10% common in transparent LCD displays.

By 2017, LG believe they will have created a 60-inch Ultra-HD, flexible TV that can be rolled into a small cube and transported without affecting its function.

Rather than a TV set in your living room, LG insists we will be able to pack our TVs when we go on holiday. The screen could also be used like a projector screen — without the projector.

So, does this mean we’ll soon all be walking around with TVs tucked under our arms? In reality it is likely that rollable TVs will be far too expensive for most consumers and experts suggest they will probably mainly be used for retail display purposes, at least at first.

Even when the cost does come down, there’s some doubt over whether people will jump at the chance to own a rollable TV. With tablets and smart phones ubiquitous, why would you want to carry your home TV when on the move? And while some TV addicts may like the idea of taking their TV on holiday with them, many more will feel they can probably do without it on the beach.
