There is a lot of truth to the saying “It cost to be a boss.”

Becoming a great leader is a lifelong quest, but one definitely worth pursuing. However, pursuing the look of a boss requires a great deal of effort and even money. Many times, when a leader walks into a room, you can tell right away that they are the boss and own the domain. This isn’t an easy skill to develop; like anything else, it takes much practice.

Here is how you can look like a boss, even if you aren’t one yet.

1. Stay fit
It is no coincidence that the majority of CEOs in the Fortune 500 are physically fit. Whether it’s running marathons or lifting weights, most leaders have a workout routine. The demands of leadership can be strenuous, and the physical aspects are just as important as the mental ones.

2. Shave
The vast majority of CEOs, millionaires and billionaires are clean-shaven. There seems to be a correlation between moving higher up in corporate seniority and having less facial hair. Go for the Wall Street look, not the "been in the wilderness without a razor" look.

3. Walk with a strut
Many times, non-verbal communication says more than words. Your body language not only affects others’ perception of how powerful you are, but it also changes your own feelings of confidence and power. Walk with a strut when you enter a room. Show off your swagger and the fact that you're the man.

4. Sit up straight
Maintaining good posture is an easy physical hack to showing power. It’s why you’re supposed to stand up tall and hold your ground when encountering a bear. Studies show that sitting up straight will make you happier, more confident and less risk averse.

5. Wear clothes that actually fit
People in power always wear tailored clothing. One of the easiest ways to ruin an outfit is to wear clothes that are too large for you, or in some cases, too small. You may work out but no one would ever be able to tell under a shirt that is way too big for you.

6. Rock a suit
If you want to be a boss, you need to dress like one and that includes owning at least one quality suit. Even if you don’t need to wear a suit every day, it’s important to have one for the occasions where you need to show status. Get a tailored suit, not the boxy suits from the 90s.

7. Incorporate ties
Ties are a great way to stand out and look like a boss. You don’t have to be wearing a full suit to rock a tie. On normal days, skinny ties are an easy addition to an outfit. When really wanting to stand out, bow ties work great.
