Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reached out to President Barack Obama Tuesday to make sure they’re still pals after she criticized his foreign policy in a recent interview with The Atlantic.

She called Obama ahead of an event she and the president will attend Wednesday to let him know her criticism of his foreign policy was absolutely not an attack on him, his policies or his leadership, her spokesman explained in a statement obtained by POLITICO.

“Like any two friends who have to deal with the public eye, she looks forward to hugging it out when she they see each other tomorrow night,” he added.

She delivered heavy criticism of the president’s handling of Syria in The Atlantic interview: “The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against [Syrian dictator Bashar al] Assad — there were Islamists, there were secularists, there was everything in the middle — the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which the jihadists have now filled,” she said. (RELATED: Hillary Clinton Can’t Escape The Obama Admin’s Lousy Foreign Policy Record)

But in the statement Tuesday her spokesman took pains to explain her support of the president: “Secretary Clinton has at every step of the way touted the significant achievements of his presidency, which she is honored to have been part of as his secretary of state,” the statement said.
