House of the Week: Sun-soaked Oswego County home built for a chef

WEST MONROE, N.Y. -- Roxanne Tyler's home is bright, warm and inviting, especially when there's something cooking on the stove.

Both the refrigerator and stove are commercial and like all the appliances, from the large wine chiller to the separate wall convection oven, finished with stainless steel.

There are three sinks, including the one built into the large center island that doubles as seating for at least two. The dining area next to the kitchen is cozy but open, with high, vaulted ceilings and skylights.

The property is equipped with more than just enough space to cook food, but to grow and store food as well. The backyard has a large garden, along with its own hydrant for easy watering.

The barn even has its own greenhouse, as well as a root cellar to store that year's harvest.

The root cellar would also be great to store wine, that is, if there wasn't a custom-built, 1,000-bottle wine cellar in the basement. Tyler's husband built the cellar, which has a refrigeration unit to keep it at 55 degrees, the perfect temperature for storing red wine.

The backyard features a 20-foot-by-40-foot in-ground pool. The pool house only a few feet away has a bathroom and a small kitchen with a refrigerator and pass-through window.

A sauna is connected to the pool house. Tyler said she loves to sit on the wooden sauna bench, work up a sweat and then jump into the refreshing pool.

Her five-bedroom, 2 1/2-bathroom house is deceptively large. The master suite and two other bedrooms are on the second floor, while the finished attic has two bedrooms and a small loft.

But after 31 years, Tyler is looking to downsize.

"It was a great home to raise a family," she said.

Living room: The exposed brick wall pairs well with the wood-burning fireplace, which extends up three floors through the center of the house. The oak hardwood floor has radiant heating, great for a cold, winter night. Tyler's husband built the built-in bookshelves.

Sun room: The home was built with a passive solar design. On a sunny day, the heat that comes into the sun room can heat the whole home, Tyler said. When you don't want the heat, shut off the fans and close the French doors. "It's a great room," she said.

Kitchen: In addition to the commercial stainless steel appliances and generous counter space, the kitchen also includes a wet bar, adorned with a tin ceiling. "It's a great kitchen to cook in," Tyler said.

Dining room: The dining room is tucked into a nook near the kitchen, but it's still roomy enough to entertain a crowd. Like the living room, the dining room also features an exposed brick wall.

Playroom: The black and white checkered tile give the room a charming, vintage feel. The room has a dry bar and fridge and plenty of room for a pool table. A doorway leads to the adjoining two-car garage.

Master suite: One of five bedrooms in the home. The master bedroom has two walk-in closets and radiant floor heating. The master bathroom features both a jetted tub and a tiled shower stall. Like the bedroom, the bathroom also has radiant floor heating.

Cellar: The basement is unfinished, but has a flat, concrete floor, making it ideal for a home gym, workshop or for storage. The brick-lined cellar has room for 1,000 bottles.

Outside: Along with the pool and sauna, there's also a barn in the backyard. The barn includes the greenhouse, root cellar, workshop, storage and a second two-car garage.
