Vintage photos of exquisite churches on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The art and architecture of the historic landmark churches on Staten Island are a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of our early settlers, most of whom immigrated from European countries.

For centuries churches have been a place of worship and for Christian religious activities and we know early churches were often located in houses.

Churches are usually arranged in the shape of a Christian cross -- with the longest part of a cross represented by the aisle and the union of the cross located near the altar area.

Today's modern churches have varied architectural styles and designs and in some cases buildings that were once designed for other purposes have been converted into churches. And conversely, many original church buildings are now used for other purposes as evidenced right here on Staten Island.
