Plano West Football Star Charged with Evading Arrest in Kemp

Kemp Police Department officials said they arrested a former Plano West High School football player and top recruit following a chase Saturday night.

"It was a high speed pursuit," said Kemp Police Chief Robert Walker.

Kemp police said officers saw a Ford pickup exit eastbound U.S. Highway 175 at a high rate of speed just before 7:30 p.m.

Police said when officers tried to stop the truck, the driver didn't pull over, failed to stop at a stop sign and continued onto Texas 274 at a high rate of speed.

"He put several cars in jeopardy on the road. He was swerving back and forth. He passed cars in the passing lane," said Walker.

Police said the driver — University of California Los Angeles recruit Soso Jamabo — continued south on Texas 274 and the occupants began throwing objects out of the windows.

Police said once the truck stopped, Jamabo — whose legal name is Sotonye Jamabo — was taken into custody and booked into the Kaufman County Jail on charges of evading arrest. Police said Jamabo was released after posting $7,500 bond.

The passengers, a 19-year-old male, an 18-year-old female and a juvenile were also detained, given citations and released, according to authorities.

Police said officers did find alcohol in the vehicle.

Plano West High School's prom was held Friday night in Plano, the school won't say whether Jamabo planned to attend.

Josh Rupprecht of UCLA Athletics released the following statement Sunday:

"We are aware of the reports out of Dallas regarding Sotonye Jamabo.  We are obviously concerned about these reports and are currently gathering more information. As this is a continuing process, we will withhold further comment until the appropriate time."

Kemp Police Department officials said they might release the dashcam video from Saturday night's pursuit on Monday.

NBC 5's Kevin Cokely contributed to this report.
