In the latest revelations stemming from the “12 Days of Pottermore Christmas,” author J.K. Rowling quashed speculation that Severus Snape may have been a vampire.
As she has previously, Rowling released a new riddle on the Pottermore website, the latest of which harkened back to Slughorn’s Christmas party from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
“With vampires and authors and a gatecrashing Malfoy,
Slughorn’s Christmas party is one for (almost) all to enjoy,
much to the surprise of fans, friends and the rest,
which loony Ravenclaw does Harry bring as a guest?”
Once solved, fans are treated to a new piece of writing called “Vampires” where Rowling reveals that a vampire named Sanguini was at Slughorn’s Christmas party. Rowling also writes about a vampire called Trocar who appeared in earlier drafts but never made the final books.

On the broader subject of vampires, Rowling writes that although she referenced vampires, she avoided focusing on them in Harry Potter, as she felt that enough had already been written about them and that she could “add little to the tradition.”
Most tellingly, Rowling dismissed rumors that Snape is a vampire, writing: “While it is true that he has an unhealthy pallor, and is sometimes described as looking like a large bat in his long black cloak, he never actually turns into a bat, we meet him outside the castle by daylight, and no corpses with puncture marks in their necks ever turn up at Hogwarts. In short, Snape is not a re-vamped Trocar.”
Rowling has been very active with Potter-related news and tidbits in recent months, tweeting riddles and releasing new writing on the Pottermore website, and yesterday she confirmed that the character of Anthony Goldstein was Jewish. In November, she released a backstory on Dolores Umbridge, and she has so far this month revealed new stories concerning Draco Malfoy and which character’s death is still haunting her.
Rowling intends to release six more Potter-related nuggets over the next six days.
