Microsoft has announced that a new Age of Empires game will be coming to PC. Age of Empires IV will be developed by Relic Entertainment, makers of the Dawn of War series.

The trailer depicts battles throughout many different periods and regions, from the height of the Roman Empire to early naval warfare, conquistadors, revolutionaries, and samurai.

Prior to the trailer unveiling, Microsoft confirmed that Age of Empires II and III would also be receiving Definitive Editions, along the lines of the upcoming remaster of the first game in the series.

This is the first new installment in the mainline Age of Empires series since 2005. The original creators of the series, Ensemble Studios, released Age of Empires in 1997, and were acquired by Microsoft in 2001, where it operated as an internal studio until 2009.

Though Ensemble shuttered its doors in 2009, the AoE brand lived on through several mobile and free-to-play games like Online, World Domination and Castle Siege. In the time since, expansions have still made their way to the HD version of Age of Empires II.
