Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris didn’t hold back in his opening number, poking fun at the perceived underrepresentation of black actors in Hollywood.
Harris said, “Today we honor Hollywood’s best and whitest. Sorry, brightest.”
The Academy came under fire in January after the acting nominations went to only white actors and actresses. It’s only the second time in nearly two decades that the acting nominees didn’t include a single actor or actress of color.
In 2011, the 20 nominees also were entirely white. Before that, one has to go back to 1998 for an all-white acting group.
