Samantha Cameron has described the fashion minefield and wardrobe near misses she had to navigate during her six-year spell in Number 10.

The designer and businesswoman has recalled how she had to "wrestle a new bra" from someone in David's staff and feared people could "see my cellulite" at a party conference.

The 46-year-old also described having to coordinate with Michelle Obama's wardrobe and planning for events up to three months ahead.

Mrs Cameron, in a column for the Sunday Times Style magazine, told how easy it is to envy how men "just get up every day and put on a uniform" but that women can "weaponise" their wardrobe with colour, patterns and shapes.

She paid homage to Theresa May's ability to juggle a hugely stressful 24/7 job while considering her outfit every day.

"It is easy to underestimate the time and effort it takes to look good - and appropriate," said Mrs Cameron.

"When I was in Downing Street, I would start looking two or three months before a big event."

Mrs Cameron also warned of leaving the house before travelling without laying out the right bras, belts and shoes for each day.

"I had all kinds of disasters: I once had to wrestle a new bra off some poor member of Dave's team," she said.

She also said she rarely wore trouser suits in public alongside her husband, because of his fondness for navy blue, which would mean they looked like "Thing One and Thing Two".

'SamCam' also had to touch base with Michelle Obama's "people about her outfit" before state visits and - "no disrespect to the Queen" - she does not like hats because of her fine hair.

Mrs Cameron said, on one occasions, she felt "paranoid that people could see my cellulite" when wearing a short polka-dot dress, and so vowed never to wear above-the-knee clothing at big events again.

She also described how she felt her "beautiful taffeta dress" rip at another party conference and so she stood strategically behind her husband.

She also added: "I also realised that I was not very good with make-up, so I got a make-up artist to come and give me a lesson when Dave became leader of the Tory party."

The Camerons broke silence on the General Election campaign trail earlier this week by posting a picture of their feet on social media to celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary.
