Redstone Arsenal shooter scare a 'false alarm,' investigators determine

The Criminal Investigation Division probing reports of a possible active shooter yesterday at Redstone Arsenal have deemed it a false alarm, Garrison officials said.

The determination comes after a review of yesterday's incident, according to Garrison Commander Col. Tom Holliday. Someone reported "what they thought sounded like a gunshot," Holliday said, prompting a three-hour shutdown of the massive North Alabama military base.

"Because the safety of the workforce is a top priority, Redstone Arsenal leadership took the threat seriously and acted accordingly to thoroughly and orderly clear the building," Holliday said. "Training and preparation for these incidents paid off; the system worked, due in large part to the partnerships and mutual cooperation the arsenal shares with local, state and federal authorities.

"Everyone plays a role in workplace safety. Redstone leadership continues to encourage the workforce to maintain situational awareness and vigilance," he added.

The arsenal was placed on lockdown yesterday morning around 10:20 a.m. after two 911 calls reported an active shooter inside the Sparkman Center. A "run, hide, fight" order was issued and personnel were directed to shelter in place; all gates were closed and barricades went up at entrances and exits.

The lockdown lasted for about two hours for most buildings, with the Sparkman Center reopening at 3 p.m. after it was searched and cleared. Two minor medical incidents were reported in connection with the evacuations, garrison officials said.
