Donald Trump Walk of Fame star vandal in police custody

A suspect is in custody regarding the vandalism of Donald Trump’s Walk of Fame star, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to EW. The news was first broken by Cory Palka from the LAPD’s Hollywood Division, who tweeted about the arrest Thursday morning.

Trump’s star, dedicated in 2007 for his work on The Apprentice, was found destroyed Wednesday morning. The culprit sent video of the vandalism (which took place early in the morning when few people were around) to Deadline, and identified himself as James Otis in an interview with the L.A. Times on Wednesday. Otis claimed he had destroyed the star in reaction to the multiple sexual assault allegations against Trump, and said he would eventually turn himself in and pay for damages. (Trump has denied all of the claims, and has threatened to sue his accusers after the election.)

“I just sort of had enough with Mr. Trump’s aggressive language toward women and his behavior, his sexual violence with women and against women,” Otis told the Times. “I’ve had personally in my own family four people who have been assaulted or have had sexual violence happen to them. It all became very personal.”

Trump’s destroyed star was rebuilt on Wednesday.

“The Hollywood Walk of Fame is an institution celebrating the positive contributions of the inductees,” Leron Gubler, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement. “When people are unhappy with one of our honorees, we would hope that they would project their anger in more positive ways than to vandalize a California State landmark. Our democracy is based on respect for the law. People can make a difference by voting and not destroying public property.”
