More than 1,000 customers without power in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY -- More than 1,000 customers living near Liberty State Park are without power this afternoon as the temperature continues to rise.

PSE&G is reporting an outage near Caven Point Avenue that is affecting 1,282 customers. The cause of the outage remains under investigation and is expected to be restored within hours, according to the utility company's website.

Cooling centers will remain open throughout the city until Wednesday. The city is encouraging all residents, especially pregnant women, young children, and the elderly, to use the centers as needed.

Sweltering heat has been reported across the state over the past few days, with temperatures sitting in the low to mid 90s today. Monday is expected to be even hotter in Jersey City, with the temperature expected to top at nearly 100 degrees.

PSE&G recommends customers run their appliances in the morning and afternoon when the temperature is cooler and to use smaller appliances to cook -- such as a microwave or crock pot -- in efforts to not heat a residence by using a stove.
